Free Halloween Candy Speech Activity

This past week my students worked in groups on a Halloween candy activity that they absolutely loved. I did this lesson with my fifth graders. Keep it simple or expand upon it over several classes. This could be a great activity to do on the day of Halloween with your older elementary or middle school students.

The goal of this activity is for students to brainstorm names of candies, select a few candies to put together to form a word chain that is 4- or 8- beats in length.

Things to consider:

  • Create student groups of 3-5 students. Any smaller and they might not be confident in creating. Any larger and there’s too many of them wanting their input to count.

  • Simplify by providing students with a curated list of candies ahead of time.

  • Extend by asking students to create movement for each candy or each phrase. Another extension is to have students create two separate

  • Go beyond having students speak their phrases. Ask them to create body percussion patterns for their rhythms or to add movement for each candy or phrase.

Have a ghoulishly gruesome time using this activity with your students!
